sands of grads out in the Canadian
food industry. “You would be hard
pressed to find a kitchen that doesn’t
have a connection with Liaison. Res-
taurant owners and kitchen managers
contact us regularly to ask for Liaison
grads—we’re the go-to place for the
best people,” Florio comments.
Liaison makes sure that grads are
as best prepared as they can be for the
workforce. “Part of our standard cur-
riculum is job training and job finding
training,” Mikler says.
Not only does Liaison contribute
to the workforce in a very substantial
way, the College also works with the
community in a significant capacity.
Florio says that Liaison started its
Youth Success Fund as a scholarship
program to offer to promising stu-
dents, and “it’s been
very successful.”
Florio under-
stands overcoming
barriers. As a youth,
he had to rise above
his economic situa-
tion to achieve suc-
cess. He is now committed to helping
Hamilton area youth at risk, through
the College.
The Liaison College Youth Suc-
cess Fund was created in partnership
with the Hamilton Area John Howard
Society. The fund was established to
address the needs of youth in the area
who face barriers prohibiting them to
reach their full potential and succeed
in their dreams,” the College website
notes. Indeed—there have
been many promising stu-
dents who have received
the scholarship (see side-
bar).
When it comes to food
and developing for the
future, Liaison reaches out
regularly to partners to understand
new and innovative trends, and works
with many organizations to develop
mentorship programs. The College’s
reach clearly extends past its duties to
train and educate students.

Why select Liaison, besides the
obvious reasons? “Choosing Liaison is
a personal choice when you’re ready—
and we are non-traditional and try to
match a student’s needs as best as we
can,” Mikler says. “We allow for way
more action in the kitchen and that’s
what our students love about us,” she
concludes.
