There is no place in a SIPs home for
the cold air to meet the warm inside
air and create condensation that can
lead to black mould inside the wall
cavity. This has been a very significant
finding in terms of the health benefits
of SIPs—they simply perform better,”
Frenette comments.
COMPANY PROGRESS
Currently, operating in a small
market for SIPs has been challenging,
but Frenette and his team are making it
work. The company has built projects
all over Western Canada, and the com-
pany sees about $1 million in annual
revenue. Projects have been completed
in both the residential and commer-
cial space, and “every customer has
been ecstatic with the results,” Frenette
beams.
The volume of projects that come
in for Red & White all depend on how
people find out about SIPs, and if they
realize the benefits of building with
SIPs before choosing other housing
materials.
Customers have always been
drawn into show homes with lots of
eye candy—pretty countertops, nice
finishings, etc. No one ever considers
the walls when buying a home,” Fren-
ette says. “What we’re trying to do
is open the customers’ eyes to a new
option for home construction. You can
upgrade all of those pretty elements
of a home over time, but no one ever
changes the walls. We want homeown-
ers to realize that’s the more significant
thing they should look
at.”
Going forward,
the challenge will be
to get more builders
on board, building
with SIPs and chang-
ing the way the con-
struction industry sees
SIPs. Red & White De-
velopments can help
customers from start
to finish with SIPs,
from design to final product assem-
bly. And after considering all angles
of building with SIPs, one has to won-
der what Frenette has been pondering
since he started Red & White Devel-
opments: “When
you consider all the
benefits, includ-
ing proven lower
building costs, why
wouldn’t you want
to build with SIPs?”
