When it comes to CanChem’s marketing
strategy, the company is not trying to
reinvent the wheel. Petersen adds: “It’s all
about relationships and when we go out and
talk to people, we are not just trying to sell
the products that we have, we are looking for
the problems that people are currently
experiencing and constantly developing
products and practices that solve the
problem.”
Petersen joined the company in 1995 when
she was 24 years old. As a female executive,
she has seen tremendous personal and

She took over the role of president from her
mentor, Harvey Heinrichs, P.Eng., who is
still doing engineering consulting work for
the company. She adds: “He was the most
amazing mentor. I learned so much from him
and feel so fortunate to have this amazing
opportunity. I certainly have different ideas
and I am bringing in fresh people who are
capable of being a part of this culture.”
CanChem has also hired a business
coaching service, which has helped Petersen
maintain focus on the company’s growth. In
2011, she spent the year developing a
strategic plan for hiring and training. “In
doing that, over the course of the next year, I
want to finish up with the stabilizing of
those new employees; putting them out in
the marketplace and making them feel secure
on their own and within our team. We need
to focus on maintaining consistent new
business and me being out there and
marketing our company more and more.”
