It captures what Canadian man-
ufacturing is about. Lots of produc-
tion effort,” explained video judge Joe
Terrett, editor of PLANT and PLANT
West.
More than Machines, a short
video by three female Grade 8 stu-
dents from St. Michael’s Catholic High
School in Kemptville, ON gives a dif-
ferent take on manufacturing, dem-
onstrating that manufacturing is an
everyday part of life. From phones and
hats to baking and playing music, the
over-arching message is manufactur-
ing is ubiquitous. It’s more than just
machines, according to Taylor Gerus,
Madeleine Hubbard and Ashley
Snippe.
It has some pretty smooth
moves, especially for Grade 8s,” Terrett
added.
The final video on the shortlist is
a take on manufacturing from the per-
spective of two Grade 8 students from
Estevan, SK. Bradey Blondeau and
Austin Bye, host a late-night talk show
style conversation in What is manufac-
turing?
Videos can be viewed on the mfg-
month.ca web portal.
Was it successful?
It’s hard to put in place specific
metrics to gauge success,” Brownlee
said. “But going into this, we decided
that if we educate just one person on
manufacturing and they learn about
this great industry, then it is successful.
I know we accomplished that goal.”
While the curtain has drawn on
2014’
s national celebration of manufac-
turing month, plans are already being
made to make next year’s event both
bigger and better.
For us, planning and executing
the inaugural manufacturing month
was truly seeing is believing, but cel-
ebrating Canadian manufacturing
doesn’t end here,” Brownlee added.
We are working with our national
partners like BDO to keep the momen-
tum going throughout the year.”
We learned a lot through this
process and we are already starting to
make plans for October 2015, employ-
ing our own innovation and creativity.
We want to make it bigger and better
every year, but that’s up to us to make
happen, or manufacture.”
