results,” he explains. “Companies now
are looking to cut costs, and there is
enough proof in the literature available
from industry and the
hat industry is finally start-
ing to understand why this technology
is so important. That is why we have
worked so hard and sacrificed much
personally to save it.”
Standards set out by ASHRAE
(
the American Society of Heating, Re-
frigerating and Air Conditioning Engi-
neers) have outlined that buildings in
the U.S. should all be heated the way
that Sofame has been promoting for
the last 29 years: at 140ºF using con-
densing boilers to achieve minimum
90
per cent fuel to water efficiency, and
so, “companies are realizing the po-
tential of our heating solutions—they
work and they are cost effective.”
ASHRAE has recognized Sofame
indirectly with five awards. The first
came in 1999, and then Sofame was
recognized again in 2004, 2005, 2007
and 2011, for technology innovation.
Sofame has received over 20 awards
from various organizations in the US
and Canada over the years.
Over the course of the company’s
history, over 320 Sofame units have
been installed, in the pulp and paper
industry, the dying and textiles indus-
try, food processing facilities, hospitals,
and universities and in district heat-
ing. The company currently holds five
Canadian patents and four American
patents.
The latest development is the ap-
plication of condensing direct-contact
water heating to the fracking industry,
where hot water is pumped under-
ground at high pressure to break the
shale formations that hold vast quanti-
ties of natural gas. Sofame has recent-
ly developed the PercofracTM water
heater to offer 99% efficiency and
compact design to frackers, who must
truck equipment and fuel into the
wilderness to reach the gas fields. Ac-
