CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - JULY 2012
T
HE YEAR 2 0 1 2
marks the cen-
tennial celebration of the Cal-
gary Stampede. The Greatest Outdoor
Show on Earth began in 1912, created
from the vision of Guy Weadick—a
famous working cowboy and vaude-
ville entertainer. One hundred years
later, the Stampede has entertained
millions of Canadians and interna-
tional fans.
From July 6-15, The Calgary Stampede
welcomed thousands to celebrate its
monumental anniversary. We caught
up with Jennifer Booth, Publicity Man-
ager for the event to discuss the suc-
cess of the Stampede.
CIO:
What were the economic benefits
to Calgary from this year’s centennial
Stampede?
Jennifer Booth: Our year-round ap-
proximate economic benefit to Calgary
from the Calgary Stampede is $350 –
$400 million.
CIO:
And how has the Stampede
showed international audiences the
“community” that is Calgary?
JB:
The Calgary Stampede works with
the 30 community groups within Cal-
gary to determine their needs and
work together to engage people of all
cultures. We were also a part of the
Cultural Access Pass this year, offering
free admission for new Canadians.
CIO:
How have you seen the busi-
ness/networking aspect of the Stam-
“The Calgary Stampede
showcases western hospi-
tality; it is a unique place
to host clients and staff.”
